Little Grassbird (photo by Gail Bryant)

I had almost given up hope of ever taking useful video of Little Grassbird. I had heard them many times but fleeting glimpses were all that was ever achieved. However, last week a member of the local birdwatching group said that they were easy to find at Dangars Lagoon at the moment, so we made an early start in order that the sun should be in the correct position and sure enough his directions were spot on. Within minutes they left the shelter of the reeds to seek food on the mud – the water level had receded significantly over the previous week. Excellent video and photographs were taken for about an hour. We rewarded ourselves with hotcakes for breakfast at a local coffee shop. Total 494. One less to chase in order to reach the goal of 500 species.
